"The Helicopter Inventors: A Journey of Genius, Ambition, and Innovation" This captivating book tells the story of Yuri Savinsky, a Lieutenant General of Helicopter Sciences, and his eclectic group of fellow inventors from around the world. Among them are a Chinese sage, an Italian artist, a French count, an Argentinean marquis, an English aerodynamicist, a renowned science fiction writer, a Swiss watchmaker, and a journalist-photographer, along with many other diverse minds. Russia has delegated its remarkable personalities, including Boris Nikolaevich Yuriev, who holds a prominent place among them. The Yuriev family has a long lineage of officers, with Boris Yuriev's great-grandfather, Afanasiy Semenovich, reaching the rank of captain. His sons studied at the Black Sea Cadet Corps, with the middle son, Semen, becoming a colonel and the youngest, Fedor, a vice admiral. Their grandfather, Alexander Semenovich, was decorated with the Order of St. George for his participation in the Caucasian War and promoted to non-commissioned officer. Boris' father, Nikolay Aleksandrovich Yuriev, demonstrated valor in battles against the Turks and was awarded the Orders of St. Anna, St. Stanislav, and St. Vladimir. However, young cadet Boris is drawn not to military service, but to technology. He graduates from the cadet corps with honors and earns the right to enter the Imperial Moscow Technical School (IMTS), later known as the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) after the revolution. Starting in 1907, he becomes a student at one of the most prestigious higher education institutions, guided by Professor N.E. Zhukovsky. The early 20th century is a romantic era of widespread fascination with aviation. One of the centers of aviation activity in Russia is the aero club established at the MPEI under the honorary chairmanship of N.E. Zhukovsky. In 1910, a commission on helicopters is formed in the club, led by Boris Yuriev. This brings the young man closer to realizing a childhood dream that was sparked while reading Jules Verne's novel "Robur the Conqueror." From his first steps, Boris Yuriev showcases a characteristic blend of scientific knowledge and engineering creativity. His attempts at creating a rotary-wing aircraft...
